Welcome to the website for the Department of African American Studies. Since its creation at Emory more than forty years ago, the Department has defined itself by the twin principles of academic excellence and social responsibility. Through the study of the histories, politics and cultures of blacks across the African Diaspora, the Department seeks to promote greater understanding of the monumental impact of race on the lives of black people, and on the nation as a whole. In keeping with the social responsibility component of our mission, we are committed to supporting social justice organizations and initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of black communities locally, nationally and internationally.
Our website is a reflection of the academic and social missions. The site will provide you with pertinent information concerning the intellectual and programmatic life of the Department. Check back frequently for updates on students, alumni and faculty members. Also feel free to scan our list of course offerings, which reflect a broad range of interests related to black life, from history, to literature, to music.
Finally, the website will provide updates on African American cultural events on campus and throughout Atlanta. If you have questions, about the website or the Department, please email us at AAS@emory.edu.
Sincerely,
Prof. Mark Sanders
Chair, African American Studies
